Norwegian Viva review: What to expect on Norwegian Cruise Line's 2nd Prima Class ship

viva cruise ship

It features a number of virtual reality experiences, two escape rooms, and a TopGolf Swing Suite. The Stadium is an outdoor game space that includes pickleball, shuffleboard, foosball, and beer pong — sans the actual beer. There are several amenities and activities to enjoy aboard Norwegian Viva, some included in the cruise fare and some not. To give you an idea of everything the second ship in the Prima class has to offer, we’ve put together this guide to the Norwegian Viva cruise ship.

PortMiami (Florida USA) to homeport 8 new cruise ships in 2023-2024

I understand that any new ship takes a few days to figure out, but some of the layout on Norwegian Viva still doesn't make sense to me, even after nine days on board. Guppies, which normally caters to kids from 6 months to 2 years old, has no set space on board. Toys are laid out for use by children and their parents when the two existing rooms are not in use.

The Haven Deluxe Owner’s Suite with Large Balcony is at the back of the ship. It includes a separate living and dining area, two bedrooms with king-size beds, two baths with jetted showers, a half-bath for guests, an outdoor hot tub, and additional bedding to accommodate six total guests. The Haven Penthouse with Balcony features a king-size bed, a bath with jetted shower, a sitting area, and a large balcony. Some of these suites come with bedding to accommodate one additional person.

River Cruises 2025

On Norwegian Viva, teens can attend age-specific activities throughout the vessel and in the Splash Academy area when it's not in use. You'll also find Starbucks, a whiskey bar, a few shops, and desks for guest services, shore excursions, Wi-Fi assistance and future cruise bookings in the central area. Vibe Beach Club is an adults-only relaxation area (surcharges per day apply) with cantilevered whirlpools (2x infinity spa pools/hot tubs), an outdoor pool bar, sunbathing area (with loungers and luxury chaise lounge chairs), private cabanas. Penrose Atrium is NCL's first 3-level atrium (spanning decks 6-7-8). The final oceanview category, just called “Oceanview,” doesn’t just have a window — it actually has a balcony. It’s categorized as an oceanview instead of a balcony because the view is obstructed by the ship’s free-fall dry slide.

So, whether you're taking a seaside stroll on Ocean Boulevard, swimming up to the horizon on Infinity Beach or delighting in culinary excellence at Indulge Food Hall, nothing comes between you and the sea. The neutral, timeless color scheme — a far cry from the bright purples and greens that punctuated the studio concept's original iteration — carries through to a dedicated Studio Lounge, to which all passengers booked in studio cabins have access. There, they'll find seating, free beer and soda on tap, plus daily breakfast items and snacks. "The Haven by Norwegian" on PRIMA-class NCL ships (designed by Piero Lissoni & Partners) spans 8 decks and groups suites, public areas, and exclusive venues, all positioned in the aft/stern section. The Haven Aft-Facing Penthouse with Large Balcony features a king-size bed, a bath with jetted shower, and a large balcony with an outdoor hot tub. The Owner’s Suite with Large Balcony has a separate bedroom with king-size bed, a double sofa bed, a living area, and a luxury shower.

disappointing things about Norwegian Viva

viva cruise ship

If you're a U.S. citizen departing on a Norwegian Viva cruise in Europe, you must have a passport for travel. For round-trip sailings from San Juan, you can use your original birth certificate and a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license. If you're using a passport, it must have a least six months' validity from the day your voyage ends. Inside, you'll find a small stage, a bar, walls adorned with rock memorabilia and a few tables with intentionally mismatched chairs and stools.

Or get into a livelier groove as you enjoy a craft cocktail while listening to live music at The Local Bar & Grill. Norwegian Viva will become the largest new ship to ever homeport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. On Dec. 15, she will depart San Juan on a seven-day Caribbean voyage with her first stop in Tortola, British Virgin Islands. She will then make her way to Philipsburg, St. Maarten; Bridgetown, Barbados; Castries, St. Lucia; St. John’s, Antigua; and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands for her last stop before returning to San Juan on Dec. 22. Future sailings will also include notable ports in the Caribbean for seven- and nine-day sailings.

What's special about Viva's version is that they feel just as upscale as the rest of the ship's cabins. Instead of the traditional river vessel set up of a lounge incorporating a bar, this area is divided in two. Leading from the lounge, the bar is situated at the bottom of a curved staircase. It has panoramic windows, overlooks the front of the ship and has a sheltered outdoor area which is a great spot for sundowners on warm evenings. Additionally, a ceiling only covers part of the main dining room, with some of the tables visible from the bar and lounge, and this adds to the airy and bright feel. Following a string of inaugural cruises and beginning June 2023, Norwegian Viva will be the newest ship embarking in the Mediterranean.

Second Icon-Class Ship Will Have a Furry Family Member

A standard balcony cabin has two twin beds that can convert to a queen, while a family balcony also includes a double sofa bed that can accommodate two additional people. Aft-facing balcony cabins are a bit larger; also able to accommodate four people due to the inclusion of a double sofa bed. Deck 17 plays host to an adults-only, extra-fee sundeck called Vibe Beach Club. It includes two infinity hot tubs, a full-service bar, daybeds, and cushy loungers.

All cabins are perfectly equipped with flat screen TV, included mini-bar, Nespresso® machine, beauty products from RITUALS®, hairdryer, safe, air conditioning, shower and toilet and leave nothing to be desired. Adults can enjoy the adults-only space that is Vibe Beach Club. The pool deck features the first tidal wave waterslide in the Norwegian fleet, plus infinity hot tubs. In the evenings, the Theater transforms into a Vegas-style disco nightclub with live DJ programming and high-energy music. Daily at Viva Theater are held enrichment lectures, bingo, trivia games with prizes.

Forward-Facing Club Balcony Suites are at the front of the ship and can accommodate two guests. Some of these suites, plus the other two mentioned above, have connecting doors. A Forward-Facing Club Balcony Suite with Large Balcony accommodates two to four people with twin beds that can convert into a queen; some also include a single or double sofa bed.

Beauty by Design & Afficionados is the ship’s classic duty-free store, offering a variety of cosmetics, fragrances, and liquors. The Improv at Sea comedy venue can also be found on deck 7, which has its own bar. Lastly on this deck is a large Starbucks outpost, serving the same espresso and tea-based drinks that guests know and love on land. Deck 7 is home to Syd Norman’s Pour House — part live music venue, part bar serving up rock hits alongside specialty cocktails and other beverages. Then, the Humidor Cigar Lounge is one of the few places on board where guests can smoke cigars. Every evening, you'll also find plenty of live music throughout the ship.

When you book with one of our partners, please be sure to check their site for a full disclosure of all applicable fees as required by the U.S. Hudson’s offers 270-degree views through floor-to-ceiling windows at the aft on deck 7, complete with a white, aqua, and blue interior design. The Commodore Room, located on deck 6, serves classic favorites alongside new dishes in an interior featuring a white, navy, and gold color scheme. Surfside Cafe and Grill is the ship's standard buffet venue, serving a variety of food from self-serve stations on Deck 17 midship. Because Norwegian Viva also has The Local and Indulge, the space dedicated to the traditional buffet is smaller than on other cruise ships. I didn't eat a single meal there because when I ventured inside it was so crowded that people could barely move.

Club Balcony Suites are located on decks 9-13 and have four sub-categories. The standard Club Balcony Suite is at the back of the ship and accommodates two guests. Family Club Balcony Suites are able to accommodate up to four guests. Other nighttime events include club dance parties in both the main theater and Syd Norman's, comedy in the main theater and dedicated comedy venue Improv at Sea, and rotating acts that stay on board for a few sailings. On my voyage, I saw violinist Christopher Watkins, who plays well-known songs on a violin adorned with more than 1,000 Swarovski crystals.
